Notes: The historical dividend totals consider you hold exactly 1 share at the End Date. The tables calculated below track how fractional shares grow forward through historical stock splits to reach that single modern share, yielding highly accurate, split-adjusted cash flow projections. The full yearly dividend series results of one of the two last columns can be copied into the financial calculators for estimating your dividend yield using an average method (average of the last dividend pays per year). For a stock with steadily increasing dividend totals per year (typically a dividend aristocrat), the average method of dividend forecasting from the financial calculator will typically produce more conservative estimates for future dividends than this page using its regression estimates. The average simply will assume the dividends stay the same, instead of having a slope of increase or decrease which is what the regression calculates. Notice that the last column to the right has a regression estimate for the last year dividend. The second to last column on the right has the incomplete dividend pay for the last year, no estimate. For a stock with cyclical dividends (typically mining stocks), the regression may turn out to give pretty good estimates if the year range selected contains more than a couple of cycles. The regression will find a slope across the cycles average values for dividends and this could be a good estimator of the future years dividends, provided you have patience to go throught he cycles and focus on the average pay and not on a single year's pay. For cyclical dividends you may want to use variant A that excludes the last year, which could be an influential observation for the regression. All methods presented here will forecast future dividends based on past dividend cash flows. None of the methods presented here takes into account dividend safety and the capacity of the company to continue rising or even paying their dividends.
